How is autoimmune
type 1 diabetes
detected early?

What test can detect autoimmune type 1 diabetes early?

An autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) test, also known as autoantibody screening, is how T1D is detected.1

Choosing to take an autoimmune T1D test is an important step you can take to manage yours and your loved one’s health.

What are autoantibodies?

  • Your immune system usually makes antibodies to fight off things like bacteria and viruses.4 But in autoimmune T1D, the immune system produces autoantibodies, which may indicate that the immune system is mistakenly attacking a person’s own cells5

  • During autoantibody screening, specific autoantibodies can be tested to determine whether a person has or does not have autoimmune T1D,6–8 or to see a person’s risk of developing the condition (if one autoantibody is detected).8 Autoantibodies can appear long before symptoms develop9
