Current Early Detection Options for T1D
Research Trials in the UK are screening Adults and Children for Type 1 Diabetes autoantibodies
Overview
Early detection screening for type 1 diabetes is not currently part of any national NHS screening programme. However, Early Detection screening is available in the UK through research initiatives such as the ELSA Study and the T1DRA Study which are screening thousands of children and adults across the UK.
Screening in Children (Ages 2–17)
The ELSA Study
The ELSA Study is the largest Type 1 diabetes screening programme for children in the UK. It aims to test children and young adults for early stages of type 1 diabetes.
Eligibility:
- Children and Young Adults aged 2-17 years
- Families living in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland
- Participation is voluntary
Access Routes:
- At home testing kits (finger prick blood sample)
- Community Sites
Screening in Adults (Ages 18–70)
The T1DRA Study
The Type 1 Diabetes Risk in Adults (T1DRA) research study is testing a small finger prick blood sample for markers of increased risk to type 1 diabetes in the adult population. Although Type 1 diabetes is often associated with childhood, more than half of diagnoses occur in adulthood.
